After an exhilerating 2nd week in Cochabamba, we are finally able to fill our adoring fans in on our adventures in Hospital Viedma. It has been a week full of crying babies, heart attacks, and the swine flu. In case you are not up to date with the latest Cochabamba news, there are currently 42 reported cases. Schools are closed, and we may soon be detained to our condo since rumor has it that public places will be shut down. Not to fear, however, for we purchase our face masks everyday to fit in with the latest fashion craze.
Andrew spent the week in the burn center where he gained first hand experience of the care involved in the treatment of burn care patients. He was finally able to put his suturing skills to work as he scrubbed in along side Dr. Romero. Andrew was also able to participate in skin grafting, and we are sure he has a future in plastic surgery.
It was off to a fast start for Lauren in the adult ER as she witnessed the use of old school paddles to bring her patient back to life. From anal fistulas to appendectomies, Lauren had the opportunity to scrub in on several surgeries. Because of her excellent life-saving skills, she has now been offered a position as Chief of Paddle Use.
Tiffany basically dominated this week.
Kim excelled in the CRIN this week, where she had the opportunity to feed some of the malnurished children. She also put her maternal skills (or lack there of) to use as she learned what not to do when babies cry. She has now become a favorite among the nurses in this department.
